Four years later, in June 2012, he led his party to 27% of the vote and became leader of the Main opposition.

In the European elections of 2014 SYRIZA came first, while at the same time he was head of the campaign of the European Left and candidate (spitzenkandidat) for the Presidency of the European Commission.

From December 2012 to December 2015, he was Vice-President of the Party of the European Left.

On January the 25th, 2015 SYRIZA won the elections receiving 36% of the vote and on January the 26th 2015 he was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic.

He retook office on September the 21st after SYRIZA secured a second consecutive election victory receiving 35% of the vote.

From the elections of July the 7th 2019 to June the 29th 2023, he served as Leader of the Main Opposition.
