Alexios Birbas is a Professor of Microelectronics at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras with 40 years of research/academic experience. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Patras in 1985. He also received his MSEE and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota, USA in 1986 and 1988 respectively. In the past, he held Professorships at the University of Minnesota (1988-1989) and at INPG, Grenoble, France (1990-1991). He has supervised a large number of Diploma Theses and over 20 PhD Theses. His former students hold senior positions in Academia and Industry (in companies such as Ericsson, Broadcom, Dialog, Analog Devices, Qualcomm, Intel, etc.). His research interests (more than 150 publications in journals and major conferences) include: a) electronics (electronic/optoelectronic devices, electronic noise models, sensors and read-out circuits, high-speed analog and mixed-signal VLSI circuits, error-correction and readout circuits, communication circuits, machine learning acceleration circuits, hardware virtualization, new computing devices) and b) cyber-physical (CPS) systems (IoT, software/hardware co-implementation, 5th and 6th generation networks, the smart grid and energy market as CPS, optimization, AI/ML algorithms and cloud/edge computing). While at the at the University of Patras, he has attracted a significant number of research projects moreover he has extensive industrial experience (management, consultting) and has co-founded three start-ups, one of which was acquired by INTEL.
