Dr. Constantinos Stathopoulos was born in Patras. He is currently serving a three-year term (2024-2027) as the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Patras. He graduated from the Department of Biology (1991) and received his PhD in Biochemistry (1996) from the School of Medicine of the University of Patras and then he joined Yale University (USA) as postdoctoral research associate (1998-2002). He took his first faculty position as Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly in Larissa (2002), before moving back to Patras as an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine (2009). Since 2014, he has served as a Full Professor, and in 2021, he became Head of the Department of Biochemistry of the School of Medicine. In 2018-2019, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland, USA), and he was invited to give lectures at Yale, Temple, and Ohio State University (USA). He has been a visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg (France) and the University of Tubingen (Germany). He is Editorial Board Member for the international scientific journals International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Antibiotics, Frontiers in Genetics, and FEBS Letters, and several scientific societies. He has served as a reviewer for >60 international scientific journals, all the main national research funding agencies (GSRT, HFRI, IKY), for foreign agencies (Israel, Germany, Austria, Cyprus, etc.), and the European Union (ERC, HORIZONS2020-IMI, COST). His work focuses on studying RNA molecules as regulators and biomarkers in human diseases, using novel technologies. He has received 20 awards in national and international conferences, and he has coordinated several national and international research grants (current funding >1 million euros). He has been an invited speaker to numerous national and international conferences and research institutes, he has organized several national and international conferences and he has supervised 13 PhDs, 35 Master’s, and 60 undergraduate students. He has published >100 publications in top-tier international scientific journals, >240 abstracts or short publications in international and national conferences and 2 book chapters.
