Dr. Dimitrios Koukopoulos is currently serving a three-year term (2025-2028) as the Head of the Department of History-Archaeology at the University of Patras. He graduated from the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics of the University of Patras and received his M.Sc. in Communications and Signal Processing from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine of the University of London in UK. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics of the University of Patras. He took his first faculty position as Assistant Professor at the T.Ε.Ι. of Ionian Islands, then he joined the University of Ioannina and the University of Western Greece as Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the Department of Cultural Heritage Management and New Technologies in Agrinio, before moving back to Patras as an Associate Professor at the Department of History-Archaeology. Also, he has served as a member of S.E.P. in Hellenic Open University. Since 2024, he has served as a Full Professor, and in 2025, he became the Head of the Department of History-Archaeology of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research interests are informatics and cultural technology. His research work focuses on algorithms in network environments, intelligent digital cultural environments, artificial intelligence in culture, multimedia system technologies, security management in multimedia environments and cyber security technologies. He is the Director of the Postgraduate Studies Program "Modern Approaches to the History and Archaeology of Cities". He has many years (>25 years) of experience as coordinator and participating researcher in more than 23 national and European research and development programs. He has more than 90 publications in prestigious international journals and conferences, while he has edited a book on digital cultural environments in IGI and written several chapters of scientific books. Recently, one of his works focusing on AI in culture received the best demo paper award in the prestigious 32nd ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization Adjunct. He is/was a member of the Technical Program Committee in a number of international conferences IEEE Globecom 2025 SAC – MLCN, ΙΕΕΕ APWiMob 2025, IEEE ICC'25 – SPC, ΙΕΕΕ ICMLCN 2025 etc. He is a reviewer in prestigious international journals like Journal of Cultural Heritage, IEEE JSAC, ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal, Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications, Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing, IEEE Access, Neurocomputing, Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing etc. He has organized special topics at conferences and participated in numerous international conferences as a member of their scientific committee. He has organized 8 workshops in international conferences focusing on intelligence in digital humanities, mobile and multimodal HCI design approaches in museums for people with impairments, multimedia systems for culture, and applications and security in cultural heritage environments. He has supervised PhDs, Master’s, and undergraduate students. He is socially active by organizing workshops, invited speeches and other activities.
