José M. de Areilza is the Secretary General of Aspen Institute España. He teaches courses on geopolitics and power and influence at ESADE Business School, Barcelona, where he holds the Jean Monnet-ESADE Chair, and at London Business School. Between 1996 and 2000 he served as Advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister on European and North American affairs. He has published extensively about European integration and Geopolitics. He is the Editor-in-Chief of “Política Exterior”, a leading magazine in international relations, Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Vice President of the US-Spain Council Foundation, Academy Adjunct Faculty at Chatham House, London, and Trustee of the Spanish Naval Museum, Ministry of Defence. He writes a Sunday column on international affairs at ABC, a national newspaper. Between 2017 and 2021 he was co-Chair of the UK-Spain forum (British-Spanish Tertulias). He has been Visiting Professor at William and Mary School of Law, Virginia, National University of Singapore and INSEAD Business School, France. José holds an LL.B. degree with High Honors from Madrid Complutense University, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) & Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (S.J.D.) degrees from Harvard University and an M.A. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is a Member of the New York Bar.
