Former Minister of Environment, Head of the National Institute for Climate and Environmental Policy

Tamar Zandberg is the former Minister of Environmental Protection and currently heads the National Institute for Climate and Environmental Policy at Ben-Gurion University. During her tenure (2021-2022), she spearheaded Israel’s first-ever Climate Law and led groundbreaking environmental policies, including nature-based solutions, climate adaptation, and the protection of natural resources. She played a key role in recognizing climate change as a national security threat and promoted major investments in climate innovation and sustainability, as well as environmental education. Previously, she served as a Knesset member for the Meretz party, advancing progressive environmental policies, social justice, human rights and democracy. Before entering national politics, she was a City Council Member in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, focusing on sustainable urban planning. Zandberg holds degrees in economics, psychology, law, and social psychology and lives in Tel Aviv with her partner and daughters. In 2024, she joined Ben-Gurion University and currently heads the National Institute for Climate and Environmental Policy, which aims to promote science-based policy at the national, local, regional, and international levels.
