H.E. Alexandros Papaioannou has been the Ambassador of Greece to the Federal Republic of Germany since January 2025. His distinguished diplomatic career encompasses extensive experience in European and international affairs, with key postings in multilateral organizations and high-level advisory roles.
Before his current appointment, Papaioannou served as Director of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Greek Foreign Minister from September 2023 to February 2025. From December 2022 to September 2023, he was Greece’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva. He also held the position of Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from October 2020 to December 2022.
Papaioannou’s expertise includes strategic and operational planning, having led a task force in 2020, and significant experience with NATO, where he worked for over seven years as an officer responsible for NATO-EU relations and as a policy advisor in the Secretary General’s Policy Planning Unit.
His earlier diplomatic career includes service as Deputy Head of Mission at the Greek Embassy in Tunis (2006–2008), and various postings at Greek embassies in Rome, Moscow, and the Holy See, as well as assignments within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens and Brussels.
Born in Greece, Papaioannou holds a Master of Arts in European Politics and Administration from the College of Europe (1995–1996) and a Bachelor of Science in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) (1992–1995). He has also been a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe since 2017.
Fluent in English, French, and Greek, with working knowledge of Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, Ambassador Papaioannou brings a wealth of diplomatic expertise and a deep understanding of European and transatlantic affairs to his role. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Italian honor Cavaliere dell'ordine della Stella d'Italia in 2018.
