Dimitris Avramopoulos is a seasoned Greek politician and diplomat, whose public service career spans over four decades.
He currently serves as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament and was the European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship from 2014 to 2019.
Throughout his political career, Mr. Avramopoulos has held several ministerial posts, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of National Defence (twice), Minister of Tourism, and Minister of Health and Social Solidarity. He was also elected multiple times to the Hellenic Parliament and served two terms as Mayor of Athens (1995–2002).
Mr. Avramopoulos holds honorary doctorates from Adelphi University, Drexel University, Kingston University, and Deree – The American College of Greece. He has also been named Honorary Professor at Peking University and the European College of Parma.
In recognition of his service, he has received awards and state honors from over 20 countries, along with the highest distinctions from more than 40 foreign and 40 Greek cities.
He earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Athens and an MA in European Studies from the Université libre de Bruxelles. In 2003, he was a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Mr. Avramopoulos is the father of two sons, Filippos and Iason.
