Alexios Birbas is Professor of Microelectronics in the ECE Department of University of Patras. He received the MSEE and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota USA in 1986 and 1988 respectively. He has held faculty positions at the University of Minnesota (1988-1989) and at INPG, Grenoble, France (1990-1991). He has supervised a large number of Diploma Theses, 22 PhD Theses and has published more than 180 papers. His legacy research interests include device electronics, optoelectronics, mixed signal high speed design, sensors, readout circuits, AI/ML hardware accelerators, computational semiconductor metrology, communication electronics, and IoT. Dr Birbas is also active in the area of Cyber Physical Systems where he contacts research into smart grid electronics, B5G communication systems, resilience and sustainability of infrastructure systems with emphasis in the energy system (electric grid, congestion management, flexibility, nodal energy markets, cybersecurity, and data center sustainability) using AI/ML. Dr. Birbas has been active consultant in the Industry and has also served in executive Industrial positions. Moreover, he has been involved into three start-ups. He has participated and led a large number of Horizon projects, he is a member of the HCCC Executive Board as well as, he is the chairman of the SNS/Horizon HW working group.
