Peter Gerald Malone MA LLB FRSA Nutshell Career: Lawyer, Politician, Journalist, Broadcaster, Businessman – and Opera Critic! Education: Peter Gerald (Gerry) Malone MA, LLB, FRSA (GM) was born (21st July 1950) in Glasgow, where he attended St Aloysius College and The University of Glasgow. He graduated MA, LLB in 1973. Legal Career: GM is by profession a Scottish lawyer. From 1974 to 1983 he was a partner in Malone & McKay, Solicitors, Glasgow, latterly Aitken Malone & McKay. GM maintains his membership of The Law Society of Scotland. Politics: 1983 – 1997 – with interregnum: GM has maintained an active interest in politics since student days. He was elected as a Conservative to the House of Commons in 1983. There, he served on the House of Commons Energy and European Affairs Select Committees from 1983 to 1986, then as a Government Whip from 1986 to 1987 in Margaret Thatcher's government, when Member of Parliament (MP) for Aberdeen South (1983-87). He was out of parliament between 1987 – 1992 after defeat at the 1987 General Election. Re-elected for the Winchester constituency in 1992, GM was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party from 1992 to 1994, then Minister of State for Health in John Major's government from 1994 to 1997. Between 1988 and 1991 GM was Director of European Affairs at the Energy and Policy Center, JFK School of Government, Harvard, Mass., USA. From 1988 to 1994 GM was an adviser to McGrigor Donald, one of Scotland’s largest law firms. Post politics: Since leaving Parliament in 1997 – losing Winchester by 2 votes – GM has built a portfolio of interests in the financial services, healthcare, software and energy sectors in Britain and the USA. Based in Europe and New York, GM travels frequently to the Middle East, USA, the Far East, and Central Asia. He pursues an active interest in public affairs, political developments, especially the impact of Brexit, and undertakes speaking engagements. In 2024 he visited Ulaanbaatar Mongolia, where he met with the Chairmen of The Central Bank and the local Stock Exchange. In February 2026 he visited Oman and met with their Sovereign Wealth Fund and regulatory agencies. Business Commitments: Since 1997 GM has served on the boards of a range of UK and US healthcare and energy focused companies, from UK listed companies through start-ups. He is currently an Adviser KiefeRx, a US start up dedicated to providing new treatment options for neurodegenerative and immune diseases. In 2001 GM joined the board of Aberdeen Asia-Pacific Income Fund (FAX), a US closed end mutual fund, becoming Chairman in 2005. He now chairs other US funds, closed and open end, and serves as a director of the Mutual Fund Directors Forum (MFDF) in Washington DC. He is currently focused on establishing a US based thematic mutual fund vehicle focusing on defence sector investments. Wider experience and interests: GM gained extensive experience in journalism - while Scottish Editor of The Sunday Times (1987 - 1991) and Deputy Editor of The European (1997 - 1999) - broadcasting (BBC Scotland/Radio Clyde) and consultancy in public affairs (1987 onwards). He is presently the opera critic for Reaction Life, a UK-based online current affairs and cultural publication, https://reaction.life/author/gerald-malone/, and Treasurer of the Metropolitan Opera Club, New York. He is a Life Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, a member of The University Club of New York and Pratts Club in London. GM has maintained a lifelong interest in music – pianist since the age of 5 - especially opera. He has particularly close relationships with the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Wexford Festival Opera, Ireland, Scottish Opera, English National Opera and Glimmerglass Opera Festival, upstate New York. He was recently appointed American Ambassador for Longborough Festival Opera, located in the English Cotswolds, and appears as the occasional co-host, with Pat Wright, of Opera for Everyone a Podcast first broadcast as a radio show by KHOL 89.1 Public Radio, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Based in London, Scotland, New York, and Portugal, he is married to Dr Anne Blyth, a consultant anaesthetist in the NHS at St George’s Hospital, London. The couple have three adult children.
