Dr Ian Borg is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of Malta. He is actively engaged in political and diplomatic efforts to strengthen Malta’s standing at both bilateral and multilateral levels, fostering effective relationships with countries and international organisations in pursuit of peace and security. At the international level, Dr Borg currently chairs the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group. He previously served as President of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe during Malta’s Presidency between May and November 2025. He also chaired the United Nations Security Council in February 2023 and April 2024 and served as the 2024 Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE. A dynamic leader, Dr Borg was recognised among the “Top 40 Under 40” by European Voice in 2017 and featured in Forbes’ 2013 list of “30 Under 30” policymakers. He previously served as Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects (2013–2017) and as Parliamentary Secretary responsible for the 2017 EU Presidency and EU Funds (2013–2017). Dr Borg graduated as a Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 2012. At the age of 19, he was elected Mayor of Dingli, a role he held until 2013 following re-election in 2008 and 2012.
