Vassilios P. Vertoudakis is Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied Classics at the Universities of Athens, Heidelberg, and Thessaloniki, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1996. Since 2000, he has also taught at the Hellenic Open University in the program Studies in Greek Culture. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Heidelberg in 2001, supported by a DAAD scholarship. During 2023–2024, he served as Director of the research program Classical Philology in Modern Greece. Professor Vertoudakis has published extensively in the fields of ancient Greek literature —particularly Attic tragedy, epigram, historiography, and erotic literature— as well as in Classical Reception Studies, with a special emphasis on the classical tradition in Germany and the history of classical scholarship. In 2020, he was awarded the Greek State Prize for his book Aristaenetus, Erotic Letters.
