Fanis Papathanasiou Anchor | Senior international Correspondent Fanis Papathanasiou is an anchor of the daily news program UPDATE on ERT News and serves as Senior international Correspondent for ERT, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. With over 30 years of experience, he has extensively covered global affairs, diplomacy, and major international conflicts. He has recently reported for ERT on the Islamabad talks between the United States and Iran, while continuously covering major developments related to ongoing crises in the Middle East. His field reporting spans some of the most critical geopolitical events of recent decades, including coverage from the frontlines of the war in Ukraine since the 2014 annexation of Crimea, the 2003 Iraq War, and key developments across the Middle East, with on-the-ground reporting from countries such as Israel and Lebanon. Papathanasiou previously served as ERT’s United Nations and U.S. Correspondent based in New York. Currently operating from Athens, he leads the network’s diplomatic coverage and has anchored numerous international special broadcasts and live coverage of major summits, including those of the United Nations, NATO, and the European Union. Throughout his career, he has conducted exclusive interviews with prominent global leaders and influential figures, including Donald J. Trump (prior to his presidency), George W. Bush, Mike Pompeo, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Christine Lagarde, Sanna Marin, Christiane Amanpour, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and Ahmet Davutoğlu.
