Gerasimos Siasos is a Greek Professor of Cardiology and the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He also serves as the Director of the 3rd Department of Cardiology at the Athens General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases Sotiria. He previously served as Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School (2015–2016), President and Vice-President of the School of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2019–2023) and President of the Board of Directors of the “Aretaieio” and “Aiginiteio” University Hospitals (2019–2021). He is honoured with the title of ‘Great Archon Chartophylax’ of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, a distinction conferred by Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa in recognition of his contribution to the Church and Hellenism. Professional Career  Residency in Cardiology at the 1st Department of Cardiology, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.  Unanimously elected to all academic staff ranks (Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Tenured Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor) at the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.  Served in the 1st Department of Cardiology at Ippokrateio General Hospital of Athens and as Head of the Atherosclerosis Unit and the Biochemical, Immunological, and Molecular Biology Unit of the same Department.  Founder and Head of the ‘Heart and Diabetes’ Special Clinic for the monitoring of patients with both heart disease and diabetes mellitus.  Led the establishment and currently serves as Director of the 3rd Department of Cardiology at the Athens General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases Sotiria.  Founder of the ‘Heart and Diabetes’ Working Group at the Hellenic Society of Cardiology. Teaching  Developed and has taught the elective undergraduate module ‘Molecular Cardiology’ for 15 consecutive years and has served as its academic coordinator since 2011.  Teaches on 6 undergraduate modules and 5 postgraduate programmes at the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Research and Publications His research focuses on Molecular Cardiology, Atherosclerosis, Endothelial Function and Diabetes Mellitus in patients with Cardiovascular Disease. He is the author (or co-author) of over 500 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious international scientific journals (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiology, Current Medicinal Chemistry, et al.) with a total Impact Factor exceeding 2.000 and over 30.000 citations (h-index 73). He also serves as Section Editor (Cardiovascular Diseases) for the international biomedical journal Current Medicinal Chemistry (IF: 4.740). His scholarly output comprises the editing and authorship of 20 books and textbooks on Cardiology. The study in which he was lead author from Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic – published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (IF: 24.090) in 2018 – was selected that same year as one of the world’s 100 best papers in Cardiology. He has participated as an invited speaker in significant international conferences abroad, and his abstracts total more than 300. He writes extensively for the Greek print and online media on medical topics related to his specialty, as well as on broader topics related to education.
