Dr James Davies is Professor of Psychology and Medical Anthropology at the University of Roehampton, London. He holds a DPhil in Social and Medical Anthropology from the University of Oxford and is a qualified psychotherapist. His research examines psychiatry, mental health, psychotherapy, psychiatric medication, social suffering, and the wider social and political determinants of emotional distress. He is the author of several books, including The Importance of Suffering, and the bestselling Cracked: Why Psychiatry Is Doing More Harm Than Good and Sedated: How Modern Capitalism Created Our Mental Health Crisis. He is also a co-founder of the Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry. Prof Davies has served as an expert adviser to the UK Government and has undertaken extensive parliamentary and policy work on mental health and prescribed psychiatric drugs. He has contributed to government reviews and parliamentary initiatives in mental health and is a founding member of the Beyond Pills All-Party Parliamentary Group in Westminster, Londond. His work seeks to bring greater attention to the social, economic and psychological dimensions of mental health alongside biomedical approaches.
