Panos Zachariadis is a Mechanical Engineer (BSc) and a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer (MSE) from the University of Michigan. He has 40 years of diverse experience in shipping, having served for a long time as Superintendent in New York, following periods of shipbuilding supervision in Japan and sea service in bulk carriers and oil tankers. Since 1997 he is the Technical Director of Atlantic Bulk Carriers in Greece and a member of the Greek Delegation to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) since 2004, having contributed to the development of several well-known shipping regulations (GBS, PSPC, FSA) and the prevention of others (e.g. Double Hull Bulk Carriers). Currently he is involved in the new IMO environmental regulations for ships. In cooperation with major Korean shipyards, he has applied several energy-saving ideas, some of which have become industry standards. He is a member of Technical Committees of several ship classification and professional societies, the Union of Greek Shipowners, the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO Marine Environmental Committee, and in the Board of Directors of HELMEPA and MARTECMA. He has written numerous technical guides, papers and articles and is the recipient of several shipping awards.
