Dr Heather Grabbe is an EU policy expert with 30 years of experience in research, policy-making and philanthropic strategy. She is currently Senior Advisor to the President and Chairman of the Open Society Foundations, Visiting Professor at University College London, and a Europe’s Future Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. Dr Grabbe was ranked highly among “the women who shape Brussels” by Politico for her policy influence while Director of the Open Society European Policy Institute. From 2004 to 2009 she was senior advisor to European Commissioner Olli Rehn, responsible in his Cabinet for EU policy on the Balkans and Turkey. Previously, she was deputy director of the Centre for European Reform. Dr Grabbe has conducted academic research at the European University Institute, Chatham House, Oxford and Birmingham universities, as well as teaching at the London School of Economics. She co-authored the International System Change Compass, a collaborative report with Systemiq and the Club of Rome on the ripple effects of the European Green Deal on other regions of the world. Dr Grabbe writes regularly for the Financial Times, Politico and other quality media. Her recent writings include The EU cannot be a green island in a dirty world, Ukraine can be a leader of Europe’s green transition, Refocus the EU: Planet, Lifetime, Technology, Climate politics in a fragmented Europe and How to build lasting support for Europe’s Green Deal.
