Sophia Handaka is Curator of World Cultures at the Benaki Museum, Athens and CoFounder of the CoMuseum International Conference. In both capacities, she focuses on
creating the conditions for collaboration and empowerment of communities, advocating
for the positive impact of museums and cultural organisations on society, and putting
forth issues of diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility.
Holding a DPhil from the University of Oxford in Social Anthropology with a focus on
museums and material culture, Sophia Handaka enjoys 25 years of engagement in the
field of culture, heritage and creativity with numerous exhibitions, publications, public
programs, research and development projects, cultural synergies, consulting and
teaching in her portfolio. In 2022 she contributed to a study of the Greek Cultural and
Creative Sector, including policy proposals, commissioned by diaNEOsis.
In 2021, she also co-founded the non-profit KOΛEKTIVA for social innovation and culture,
that works to encourage positive transitions to more fair and viable futures.
Sophia is member of Bosch Alumni Network and a 2019 Fellow of the U.S. Department
of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.
CoMuseum is a yearly international cultural stakeholder’s conference, organized by the
Benaki Museum, the U.S. Embassy and the British Council which It acts as a global
platform of expertise for the wellbeing of museums, cultural organizations and the
communities they serve.
