Traian Laurențiu Hristea was appointed Secretary of State for Global Affairs and Diplomatic Strategies on September 9, 2022. Previously, he held the position of Political Director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during 2021-2022. He is a career diplomat since 1996 and holds the diplomatic rank of ambassador. Traian Hristea acquired an extensive diplomatic experience during his work, both within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as within the European External Action Service. He served as Head of the EU Delegation to Mongolia (2018-2021), Head of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan (2015-2018) and Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia (2011-2015). He worked within the OSCE Mission to Tajikistan (currently the OSCE Center in Dushanbe) as a political and press officer between 1998-2000. He served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania in Ukraine during 2005-2010. He worked within the Permanent Mission of Romania to the International Organizations in Vienna during 2000-2004, and between 1997-1998 he was posted at the Romanian Embassy in Minsk. Within the MFA Headquarters, during 2010-2011, he led the Forecasting and Political Planning Department, and during 2004-2005 he was appointed as director of the Wider Europe and Republic of Moldova Directorate. Previously, he worked in the European Union Department (1995-1997; 1998). He graduated from the State University of Mongolia in 1995, from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest in 1996, as well as from the University of Law in Constanța, with a degree in Economics and Law. Since 2013, he holds the title of Doctor in History, conferred by the Ovidius University of Constanța. Mr. Traian Hristea was awarded the National Order "Faithful Service" in the rank of Knight, as well as the Order of "Diplomatic Merit" in the rank of Knight. He was also awarded the "Certificate of Honor" by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He is fluent in English, French, Russian, Mongolian, Italian and Ukrainian. He was born in Vrancea in 1970, is married and has 2 children.
