Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), member of the AUTH Laboratory of Cartography and Geographical Analysis (CartoGeoLab AUTH). With long expertise in geospatial cognitive representations processes in the context of cartographic literacy, including thematic mappings and cartographic heritage as bodies of knowledge necessary for better perceiving, understanding and managing geospatial issues in the modern world. Full Professor of Higher Geodesy and Cartography (AUTH, 1979-2015). Docent of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA, 1978); Teaching and Research Assistant (NTUA, 1971-1978); Doctor of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences (University of Uppsala, 1976); Doctor of Engineering (NTUA, 1974); Engineering diploma (NTUA, 1970). Form 1971 to 2016 research associate and visiting professor in USA (Cambridge MA), Sweden (Uppsala), Germany (Munich, Stuttgart), Netherlands (Delft), Italy (Trieste, Bologna, Venice, Brescia), Austria (Vienna), China (Xian). Fellowships received from Smithsonian Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. Member of the Council of Europe’s Commission for Higher Education and Research General Assembly and its Bureau (1994-2001). Founder and first president of the Hellenic Cartographic Society (1994-1998).  Elected Chair of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) Commission on ‘Cartographic Heritage into the Digital’ (2005-2019). Head of the ICA Conferences ‘Digital Approaches to Cartographic Heritage’ (Thessaloniki 2006, 2019; Athens 2007; Barcelona 2008, 2012; Venice 2009, 2017; Vienna 2010; The Hague 2011; Rome 2013; Budapest 2014; Corfu 2015; Riga 2016; Madrid 2018). From 2006 the founder and coordinating editor of the international web journal e-Perimetron for sciences and technologies affined to the history of cartography and maps. Currently, senior member of the DiLiMAPS (Digital Library Map System) project sponsored by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. Member of the external consulting board for ‘Geodesy’ of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (2016- ). Honorary Fellow of the ICA (2019). Doctor and Professor Honoris Causa of the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (2022). Chair of the International Cartographic Association Committee for the Selection of Award Recipients (2023).
