Nikolaos V. Sipsas MD, Ph.D. (Zurich), FIDSA, is Professor of Pathophysiology and Infectious Diseases at School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He received his medical degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. He did his post-doctoral thesis, in History of Medicine at the Medical School of the Zurich University in Switzerland, and in Infectious Diseases at the Athens University Medical School, Greece. Then he was trained in Internal Medicine at the Athens University Laikon Hospital. He was subsequently trained as a research fellow in Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, in Boston. Currently, he is an attending internal medicine and infectious diseases physician and Head of the Infectious Disease / COVID-19 Unit at the General Hospital of Athens Laiko. He also serves as member of the Greek government Advisory Committee for the COVID-19 pandemic and as chair of the Infection Control Committee of the Laiko Hospital. His research interests include invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised host, difficult-to-treat multi-drug-resistant infections, anti-microbial stewardship, HIV infection, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and zoonoses.
