Lampros Liavas

Professor of Ethnomusicology

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Philosophy, Dep. of Music Studies, Greece

Born in Athens, 1959. Studied law at the University of Athens, piano and music theory, Byzantine and Greek folk music. Studied Social Anthropology, Ethnology of southeast Europe and Ethnomusicology in Paris-France (E.H.E.S.S.).

Collaborated with Fivos Anoyanakis in the foundation of the “Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments-Centre of Ethnomusicology” in Athens, of which he was the director (1991-2014). Organized the “Samuel Baud-Bovy Ethnomusicological Archives” at the Conservatory of Geneva, Switzerland.

He edited many books, records and documentary films on Greek traditional music. Organized exhibitions, concerts and performances on Greek music and musical instruments all over Greece and abroad. He collaborates with Greek radio and television stations, producing programs on traditional music.

He was awarded by the Academy of Athens (2021, the “Spyros Motsenigos Music Prize”), and by the Technology and Research Foundation and the President of the Republic (2022, the “Outstanding University Teaching Award”).
