Giorgos Bamias, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Gastroenterology at the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He is currently the Head of the GI-Unit of the 3rd Academic Department of Internal Medicine, Sotiria Hospital in Athens, Greece.

Prof. Bamias graduated with Honors from the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, in 1989. He obtained his PhD with Honors from the same University in 2000. Between 2000-2005 he worked at the Digestive Health Center of Excellence, University of Virginia, VA, USA, where he became Assistant Professor of Research in Internal Medicine. From 2006-2017 he worked as a Gastroenterologist of the Greek NIH at Laikon Hospital. In 2017 he was appointed Faculty of the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and became Full Professor in 2022. He was granted scholarships from the University of Athens and the Hellenic Association for the Study of the Liver; obtained research grants from Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology, the Hellenic Group for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, as well as from various pharmaceutical companies; and received various Awards, including the Research Excellence in GI and Liver (REGAL) Award and the Young Investigator Award from the International Cytokine Society. In 2012 he became Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Since 2018, he has been Visiting Professor at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He has been the National Representative for Greece at the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO) for the years 2017-2023. He is a member of the Senior Research Awards Committee for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). He is a member of several international scientific societies, including the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Association for Immunology, and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization. In 2019, he was announced Honorary member of the Israeli Society for IBD. He currently serves as the President of the Hellenic Group for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

The main clinical and research focus of Pr. Bamias is mucosal immunology and more particularly the immunological characterization of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, namely Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He has contributed more than 130 publications in this field with more than 7000 citations and an h-index of 46. He is a member of the Editorial Board of several international Journals and has been a reviewer for more than 30 high-impact journals.
