Judge Michelle Brewer was appointed as a Judge in February 2020. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1998 and practised as a barrister at a leading human rights chambers. Described in Chambers and Partners as "very highly regarded for her expertise in trafficking cases, with an established track record of being at the forefront of trafficking case law”. As counsel she was involved in significant trafficking cases including leading counsel in VCL v UK (2021). At the invitation of the United Nations, Council of Europe, Supreme Court Judges of Cyprus and the OSCE she has trained the judiciary, police, local authorities, lawyers, and NGOs on the domestic, regional, and international law of human trafficking and modern slavery. She is joint editor and co-author of the leading text ‘Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery: Law and Practice’ (1st and 2nd ed). 3rd edition expected Autumn 2024.
