Dan Mihalache

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the Republic of Cyprus

On January 22nd, 2021, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, signed the presidential decree appointing Dan Mihalache as the Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Cyprus.
Before this appointment, between June 2016 and December 2020, Dan Mihalache held the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the Court of St. James’s.
Dan Mihalache was also the Head of Presidential Chancellery and the Head of Presidential Administration since December 2014, right after the election of Klaus Iohannis as President of Romania.
Mr. Mihalache has broad political experience, having led numerous political, policy and communications campaigns on behalf of the National Liberal Party (between 2009 and 2014) and for President Iohannis in 2014.
Between 2004 and 2008, Mr. Mihalache served a complete term as Member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, while in 2006 and 2007 he held a seat as Observer and then as Member of the European Parliament (MEP).
Dan Mihalache’s prior public positions include Secretary General of the Romanian Senate (2013-2014), Deputy Secretary General of the Romanian Government (2012) and Adviser to the Romanian Prime Minister (2001-2004).
Dan Mihalache (b. 1971) is a graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest (1994) and holds a PhD in Political Science (SNSPA, 2008). He also graduated from the National Defense College (1998). He is a specialist in political analysis and marketing. Since 2010 he was first an associate professor and then a university lecturer at "Dimitrie Cantemir" Christian University. In June 2019, he graduated the 14th Common Security and Defense Policy High Level Course 2018-2019 "Simone Veil" from the European Security and Defense College. Starting with October 1st, 2019, he became a Visiting Senior Fellow of the prestigious think-thank LSE-IDEAS (Diplomacy and Strategy) within the London School of Economics. In November 2019, he graduated from the Generals, Flag Officers and Ambassadors course at the NATO Defense College.
He is the co-author of the volume Three Years at the Polls, vol. I (Nemira, 2012), together with Iulia Huiu. He has also published numerous analytical articles. He is fluent in German and English.
The President of Romania awarded Dan Mihalache the National Order “Star of Romania” in rank of Knight.
He is married to Madalina Mihalache and has two children.
